8/17 Daily Roundup

Posted by Greg under Uncategorized

  • This is great stuff. Peter Schrager perfectly captures the non-descriptness/boringness/unsexiness of the mid-nineties Giants.
  • Larry Johnson and the Chiefs should provide a good test for the Giants run defense, writes Ernie Palladino.
  • Eric from Big Blue Interactive previews tonight’s game and discusses roster spots.
  • Nice job by the guys at Giants 101. Apparently, the Giants and Chargers are contemplating a Donnie Edwards – Chad Morton trade. That’s interesting, because as Dan Benton points out, we already have another option to return kicks in Willie Ponder (and maybe Michael Jennings?).
  • Despite all the off-the-field stuff, it’s business as usual for Strahan. Interesting quote from Justin Tuck about how Strahan has learned to preserve his body through the years: “His early years, he said he’d play and just get beat up. He’s learned. He knows which way an offensive lineman is leaning so it’s not full-on contact every time. It’s great to watch.”
  • Mike Garafolo on Rob Johnson’s big audition tonight. Coughlin really likes this guy, so he may be able to vault himself onto the squad with a good effort. Right now, however, he’s on the outside looking in behind Hasselbeck and Lorenzen. His arm strength after Tommy John surgery is the question.
  • John Branch on Johnson, who seems like a pretty chill guy. His mullet is really something.
  • The Giants offense is eager to get rolling, writes Paul Schwartz. They’ll roll out all eleven of their starters tonight.
  • The Giants continue to express interest in Grady Jackson, a nine-year veteran who stands at 6-2 and weighs between 355 and 360 lbs. I didn’t know how big he was. Let’s get him. They’re also flirting with Brentson Buckner, another mountainous run-stuffer.
  • John Altavilla gives us five things to watch for in tonight’s game against the Chiefs: the defensive front; Rob Johnson, no injuries, LaVar Arrington, aka Mr. Nickles, aka Mr. Five-Cents!; and Willie Ponder
  • Informative mailbag-type blog by Ralph Vacciano. Apparently, Camp Coughlin is actually not as physically demanding as Camp Fassel or Camp Reeves, which contradicts a lot of what we heard about that guy before he came here. Maybe his reputation was overblown or maybe he’s changed (probably both), but Coughlin doesn’t seem to be nearly the unconscionable ballbuster that he was made out to be. Also, Vacchiano writes that Barry Cofield is the only DT that’s been impressive thus far in camp.
  • This E.J. Underwood character is looking good. Between E.J. Underwood and R.W. McQuarters, the corners could present a challenge to the Osi Umenyiora – Mathias Kiwanuka-led defensive ends for the coolest-named position on the squad.

Why do people still care about Rob Johnson? Can’t he just go away? Him and Wade Phillips ruined Flutie’s chance at a playoff start and I am still pissed off about it, just let J-LOAD take the #3 spot.

I don’t know what the appeal of this guy is — he’s always been infamous for taking way too many sacks, and now he’s got a bad wing. He looked pretty horrendous in the early going tonight, but improved slightly as the game went on. I don’t know, maybe it’s good having someone to Hefty-Lefty and Hasselbeck.
