With all of this said, our defense is far too good (at least on paper) to perform the way that have over the last two weeks. While our offense came out with a very strong first drive, our defense (who I think needs to serve as the emotional anchor of our team--a classic Giants' trait) didn't come out at all, allowing the Eagles to walk all over them. Unfortunately, our offense is pyschologically fragile enough that an inexcusably piss-poor performance on the part of defense can derail everything. The defense deflated our offense.

Actually, I told Bob to read your "blog." Nevertheless, I agree with both yours and my pops' analyses concerning the giants. Coaching is certainly a question mark in light of many things, most critically on defense and the team's utter lack of discipline. Frankly, I hold the defense responsible for the team-wide nap that was taken during the first three quarters of the game. It is no secret that our offensive line is a (if not the most) critical element to the Giants' success this season. In fact, this has held true every season and I think this is a common factor for most every other team in the NFL. It is also no secret that our offensive line has the capability of being irratic, undisciplined, injured or just plain shitty, especially when the pressure is on. (point cont'd)

Greg,

Dan told me to read your blob. Very good and very incisive. There is a serious issue with the lack of pressure from the defensive line and I agree with your comments about the defensive coaching. There was also a serious problem with the offensive line. Special teams have also disappointed (and I am concerned about Feeley whose kicks all seem to curve left (even on extra points)). All of which leads one to wonder about the quality of the overall coaching before a big game--Carolina comes to mind, except this is a healthier and better team. The team was flat for over three quarters and there is no excuse for that. Best regards.

Thank you so much for this recap! I think you hit every key play in the game, and there were lots of them. I was so depressed around 3 P.M. and to see it turn around like that... I'm 28 years old and the only game that compares to this is Super Bowl XXV. This was so improbable though. The only other plays I'd mention are when we stuffed them when they went for it on 4th and 1 with Buckhalter running, and the play in OT when the Eagles had the ball, 2nd and 10, and you could hear the Giants yelling out "SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN!" right at the snap and shutting it down. Their crowd was dead.

That was a classic choke by the Iggles in front of their boo bird fans and it felt SO GOOD. Tiki had a rough game but at least he didn't cough one up like Westbrook did. Our season was really on the line in WEEK 2!

Anyways, thank you for documenting all of the key points of this amazing win. I put the video of Plaxico's TD on youtube.

[...] If you missed the Giants victory over the Eagles, you missed the Game of the Day, if not the Game of the (albeit young) Season. I won’t recap the game for you here (if you are truly interested, an incredible recap can be found here). [...]

Thanks so much for the wonderful recap of the game. What a crazy range of emotions, from the low point midway through the 3rd to the high point in OT. I agree with some of the problems you mentioned, specifically the following (in order of importance):

1) The penalties are shocking, especially considering Coughlin's "taskmaster" and "disciplinarian" reputation. I have no idea what the solution is, but clearly this is a poorly-disciplined team.

2) Eli must continue to learn and mature - but pocket presence comes to passers over time. Eli will soon learn to sidestep/step up into the pocket to avoid pressure. He's not that fast on his feet - but watching tape of his equally fleet-footed brother's ability to avoid the rush would help him to develop those skills.

Great win, especially considering the fact that the GMen had NO PLACE winning that game. Escaping with a victory is incredible, but clearly the Giants need to continue to hone their discipline and play, especially considering that they head to "scene of the crime" of last yr's horriffic meltdown (Seattle) next weekend.

Nice win for the Giants. There's nothing more satisfying than snatching victory out of the jaws of defeat. It really pissed my brother off too, so I was happy about that.
