Giants got another break today when defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo decided to stay with the Giants and got a new three-year contract.

After meeting with the Redskins for almost 18 hours, he decided to pass on the head coaching job, even though a deal would have been coming.

From the Daily News:

“His heart was in New York City, agent Bob Lamonte told the Daily News. “He loves the organization. He loves the team. He loves the city. At the end of the day, he couldn’t leave.

Lamonte admitted it was “hard for a young guy to turn down the potential for so much money, especially since the Redskins were reportedly ready to pay him between $2.5 and $3 million per season. But if the 48-year-old Spagnuolo does become the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the NFL, that means he’ll be making at least $2 million per season with the Giants.

The current highest-paid defensive coordinator is believed to be Gregg Williams, who is now with the Jaguars and will earn $1.9 million in 2008, which is technically the final year on his old Redskins contract.
