FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Bill Belichick has made plenty of notable decisions in his 14 seasons as the highly successful coach of the New England Patriots. Most have worked out, not surprising considering his team's success.
New York Giants starting center Jim Cordle was placed on season-ending injured reserve with an injury to his patella tendon, which he suffered Sunday in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the team announced Tuesday. Cordle joins fellow offensive linemen Chris Snee and David Baas on injured reserve. Cordle's place on the roster was taken by Stephen Goodin, who has spent the entire season on the Giants' practice squad.
ASHBURN, Va. -- There are no signs of a magical turnaround this time for the Washington Redskins - no reason to believe they can reel off a season-ending run like they did last season to capture the NFC East title or close the regular season with five consecutive as they did in 2007 to earn a wild card berth. The Redskins are three games behind the division-leading Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles following Monday night's 27-6 drubbing at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers. There are far more questions about coach Mike Shanahan's job status than there are about reaching the playoffs. "I think the players are smart enough to understand that if you are 3-8, everybody is playing for their jobs," Shanahan said Tuesday.
The Seattle Seahawks signed cornerback Perrish Cox shortly after Walter Thurmond officially dropped his appeal of the four-game suspension he received for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Thurmond will miss Monday night's game against the New Orleans Saints, road games at the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants and will be eligible to return the day after Seattle's home game against the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 22, making him available for the regular-season finale against the St. Louis Rams and the postseason.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - New York Giants starting center Jim Cordle's season is done after the team placed him on injured reserve Tuesday.
It may have seemed like a good idea to the New York Giants to hang onto wide receiver Hakeem Nicks when the trade deadline approached. After all, Nicks is a receiver who put up back-to-back seasons of 1,000-plus yards of receiving, combining for 17 touchdowns in that span during the 2010 and 2011 campaigns. But since that Pro Bowl-like stretch, Nicks' performance on the field has declined because of injuries, and his chemistry with Eli Manning has also diminished, leading to a lot of speculation that Nicks will walk away from the G-Men come free agency. The #NYG are making a mistake not dealing Hakeem Nicks.
COMMENTARY | The Cleveland Browns will apparently give anybody but Tim Tebow a shot to lead their offense. Rowan Kavner, a staff writer for the official website of the Dallas Cowboys, reported late Tuesday morning that the Browns have signed Dallas practice squad quarterback Alex Tanney. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett later confirmed Tanney's departure from the team. Tanney will take the spot of the injured Jason Campbell, who may be done for the season, on the Cleveland depth chart.
Riding a four-game winning streak, Bruce Arians’ Cardinals continue to climb the board.
COMMENTARY | It seems like ages ago that the Cleveland Browns were legitimate playoff contenders. Losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers ended all of that. Now, with five games left on the schedule, the Browns are without a quarterback, a rushing attack, or a chance at making the postseason.
