The Houston Texans thought they would be preparing for a deep run in the playoffs. Instead as the new year approaches, they're looking for a new coach and have the No. 1 pick in the draft after a stunning collapse cost coach Gary Kubiak his job and left them with the NFL's worst record. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips took over as interim coach when Kubiak was fired. Houston ended the season on a 14-game skid.
Four more NFL head coaches were fired on Monday, as the Washington Redskins' Mike Shanahan, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Greg Schiano, the Minnesota Vikings Leslie Frazier and the Detroit Lions Jim Schwartz were officially dismissed.
COMMENTARY | Rob Chudzinski was never the first choice of the new regime of the Cleveland Browns. It's public knowledge that the Browns first wanted Alabama head coach Nick Saban last winter. Chip Kelly was, depending on who you believe, maybe/maybe not Cleveland's next coach until he was wooed away by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Browns were also reportedly interested in Bill O'Brien until he decided to stay at Penn State for at least one more season.
Goodbye, Brandon Weeden, the franchise's latest first round quarterback flop, a guy who, try as he might, just can't keep up with the pace of NFL football. Don't forget to take Jason Campbell, who apparently doesn't play all that well once the temperature outside dips, with you. Newsflash to those running the Browns: It gets cold on the Cleveland Lake Erie shoreline halfway through the fall. I'm sure that the veteran running back meant well when he was brought in to "replace" Trent Richardson after Richardson was shipped to the Indianapolis Colts for a future first round pick.
ASHBURN, Va. -- One day shy of a year after leading the Washington Redskins to their first NFC East time since 1999, head coach Mike Shanahan was predictably fired Monday, less than 24 hours after his team concluded a 13-loss season with an eighth-consecutive defeat at the hands of the New York Giants. "Redskins fans deserve a better result," owner Dan Snyder said in a statement. "We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. Shanahan, who won consecutive Super Bowls in Denver while compiling a 14-year record of 146-91, departed with a year remaining on his $7 million per year contract, a ruined relationship with franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III and the return of the Redskins' laughingstock reputation that Snyder hired him to fix in January 2010.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants' management will waste little time commencing its evaluation process this week in order to halt what team COO John Mara indicated has been a season and a half slide from the top of the NFL heap to the middle of the pack. Head coach Tom Coughlin said Monday he would like to continue to coach, and while no official decision has been made as of yet, that appears to be the direction the Giants will be taking. "I expressed to Tom this morning that we do want him back as our head coach," said Mara of Coughlin, who would be entering the final year of his contract in 2014. Coughlin, 67, made it clear he is not ready to retire.
Tom Coughlin is going to get another chance to make the New York Giants a champion again. Giants co-owner John Mara told the 67-year-old Coughlin on Monday morning that he wants him to return for an 11th season with the team that he led to Super Bowl titles in 2008 and 2012 despite a disappointing 7-9 record. It marked the fourth time in five years that the Giants have missed the postseason, but this might have been one of Coughlin's better coaching jobs. Yes, I'm disappointed.'' There are some issues that have to be finalized later this week when Mara and Coughlin sit down with co-owner Steve Tisch and general manager Jerry Reese.
