As far as Peyton Manning is concerned, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders isn't the only offensive reinforcement summoned to help Denver get another crack at winning the Super Bowl. ''It's almost like Ryan Clady was a free agent acquisition,'' Manning suggested. Clady had missed offseason workouts last year while rehabbing a shoulder injury and waiting for a new contract. Physically and fiscally sound, Clady embarked on what he expected to be a big season.
Giants owner predicts playoff expansion will have to wait
New York Giants president John Mara envisions playoff expansion in the near future for the NFL. "The (NFL) would notify us in advance, but I'm thinking it's probably not going to happen for another year or so," Mara told Newsday. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in March at the NFL owner's meetings in Orlando, Fla., that the proposal to expand the playoff field -- to include 43.7 percent of the league's 32 teams -- with seven teams from each conference. Goodell said he wouldn't rule out the change for the upcoming season, but as the NFL rolls out the full regular-season schedule, Mara believes time has run out for changes to the end-of-year tournament leading to the Super Bowl.
Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder insisted again on Tuesday that he will not change the team's name despite continuing objections by Native Americans. "We understand the issues out there, and we're not an issue," said Snyder, who was speaking at a ceremony after the Redskins donated $100,000 to Park View High School to go toward the installation of a synthetic turf field. Snyder responded to critics of his Original Americans Foundation, which is providing money and resources to tribal communities throughout the country. ---The New York Giants are preparing for life without safety Will Hill, who is reportedly facing his third suspension for a violation of the NFL's drug policies.
A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that New York Giants safety Will Hill is facing a possible third suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The person, who requested anonymity because the allegations have not been publicly disclosed, confirmed Monday that Hill failed another drug test. A message seeking comment was left with Hill's agent.
The Buffalo Bills re-signed three exclusive rights free agents, wide receiver Chris Hogan, offensive lineman Antoine McClain and fullback Frank Summers, the team announced Tuesday. The 6-foot-1, 220-pounder entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 and spent a portion of his rookie year on the practice squads of the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants before joining the Bills in 2012.
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle earlier this month, said Tuesday he expects to be "100 percent" ready for camp this summer.
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning plans to be back for training camp. That could be a good or bad thing, depending on Manning’s performance this season. Manning had arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle earlier in April, but told reporters on Tuesday he planned to be ready when training camp begins in August. Eli Manning "I think I'd be safe to say I'd be 100 percent for the start of training camp. I would hope so." — Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoNYDN) April 22, 2014 A healthy Manning is one thing, but productivity is something else. Manning led the NFL with 27 interceptions during New York’s 7-9 season in 2013. He finished with 3,818 passing yards and 18 touchdowns, but Manning’s passer rating was 69.4 (second lowest total of his career). Manning led New York to a Super Bowl win during the 2011 season. However, Manning has led his team to the playoffs once during the past five years. In addition, he has thrown at least 25 interceptions twice over the past four seasons. New York signed Josh Freeman to backup Manning this season. Freeman is not expected to compete against Manning, but is a solid option if Manning is not healthy once training camp begins. Freeman can help New York’s receivers obtain quality preseason minutes if the Giants are cautious with Manning before the regular season. - - - - - - - Anwar S Richardson is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports.
