Eli Manning was the second pick Wednesday in the Pro Bowl Draft - and he's got his No. 1 guy on his side in wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The New York Giants' duo will represent Team Rice in the NFL's all-star game Sunday at Aloha Stadium. Beckham and Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald are serving as active-player captains for Team Rice, while Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman and Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Geno Atkins are captains for Team Irvin.
Health risks faced by National Football League players were back in the spotlight Wednesday after research revealed that former New York Giants safety Tyler Sash suffered brain damage before his death. Sash, 27, died last September from an accidental overdose of pain medication he had been taking for a chronic shoulder injury. The New York Times reported that researchers from Boston University discovered Sash suffered from a high level of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after the player's brain was donated for study by his family.
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is hoping big brother Peyton Manning "can go out on top" if Super Bowl 50 becomes the last game for the Denver Broncos quarterback. Peyton Manning was captured by NFL Films cameras telling New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick that this could be his "last rodeo" in the moments after the Broncos' 20-18 win in the AFC Championship game last Sunday.
The elder Manning will become the oldest starting quarterback in Super Bowl history at age 39 when he guides the Denver Broncos against the Carolina Panthers in the NFL's championship spectacle on February 7 at San Francisco.
Safety Shiloh Keo made a bad first impression when he joined Denver's dominant defense. Five days after joining the league's top-ranked defense, Keo made a big blunder, surrendering the winning touchdown in the Broncos' stunning 15-12 loss to the Oakland Raiders. Keo was a fifth-round pick in 2011 by Houston but hadn't played in the NFL since 2013.
(Reuters) - Tyler Sash, who was cut by the New York Giants after several concussions and died of an accidental overdose of pain medications, suffered from the degenerative brain disease CTE, the New York Times reported on Tuesday. Sash, who was 27 when he died last September, is the latest in a tragic list of former NFL players found to have suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, which is linked to repeated head trauma. A sixth-round draft pick of the Giants in 2011, Sash was primarily a reserve for the team during two seasons with the club, including the Super Bowl-winning campaign in the NFL's 2011 campaign.
