The Washington Redskins released four-year starting linebacker Perry Riley and defensive lineman Stephen Paea as they continued to cut down to their 53-man roster. Riley and Paea were the two biggest cuts so far, but coach Jay Gruden said they were a product of the organization's depth at those positions. Riley lost his starting job to Mason Foster and was hurt by the emergence of Martrell Spaight and Terence Garvin, and Paea became expendable when Washington signed veteran Cullen Jenkins on Monday.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The New York Giants have waived safety Cooper Taylor and placed tackle Byron Stingily on injured reserve with a concussion.
Tony Romo is hurt again, the defending champs get no respect and the rookie quarterback who wasn't drafted No. 2 overall got a starting job first. No division is more up for grabs than the NFC East. The Dallas Cowboys are Dak Prescott's team while Romo is out with a back injury.
With one hit on Tony Romo, rookie Dak Prescott went from an intriguing preseason story to the Dallas Cowboys’ starting quarterback.
The Indianapolis Colts played mostly without Andrew Luck when they missed the playoffs in 2015 after winning their division a year earlier. The star quarterback returns, and so do postseason expectations for a team that has made the playoffs 14 of the past 17 seasons. Luck missed nine games with an assortment of injuries and struggled with turnovers when he was playing.
The New York Jets are keeping their fingers crossed that David Harris' shoulder won't keep him out of the regular-season opener. The veteran linebacker was injured just before halftime of the Jets' 21-20 loss to the Giants on Saturday night. An MRI on the shoulder Sunday revealed no structural damage and X-rays were negative.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is ready for the regular season. No, the New York Jets' starting offense didn't exactly light it up during the preseason. With the starters, Fitzpatrick went 16 of 29 for 183 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions and a lost fumble in three games.
The New York Giants' offense has struggled in the preseason, and no group more than the line. The only time Ben McAdoo's team ran the ball was in the opener against Miami, which did not play its starting defensive line. Quarterbacks Eli Manning and backup Ryan Nassib have been under intense pressure, and have been sacked eight times.
Cullen Jenkins couldn't afford to sit at home and wait for an NFL team to call. The veteran defensive lineman worked out in New Jersey with trainer Javier Chimanovski throughout the offseason and long after training camps opened. Is that call going to come?''' Jenkins said after working out, signing and going through practice.
Defiant, and determined to be a conduit for change, Colin Kaepernick plans to sit through the national anthem for as long as he feels is appropriate and until he sees significant progress - specifically when it comes to race relations in the United States. ''I'm going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed,'' Kaepernick said Sunday at his locker. Two days after he refused to stand for the ''The Star-Spangled Banner'' before the 49ers' preseason loss to the Packers, Kaepernick insists whatever the consequences, he will know ''I did what's right.'' He said he hasn't heard from the NFL or anyone else about his actions - and it won't matter if he does.
