This season hasn’t been the customary trajectory for a quarterback taken with the No. 1 overall pick. The Los Angeles Rams made Jared Goff inactive for a 28-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the season opener, and coach Jeff Fisher didn’t even bump his first-round pick up to backup until Week 2, when the former Cal quarterback finally leapfrogged the immortal Sean Mannion on the depth chart. A trio of consecutive victories in Weeks 2-4 silenced any chatter about Goff supplanting journeyman Case Keenum as the starter, but that all changed when the Rams dropped below .500 with three straight losses to the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions and New York Giants entering their bye week.
Hey NFL players: If you want a safe way to celebrate touchdowns and big plays, just hug it out. Don't pretend to shoot a bow and arrow. ''Hugs are always legal,'' Dean Blandino, the NFL's senior vice president for officiating, said in an explanatory video earlier this month.
Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Malik Jackson was fined $24,309 by the NFL on Friday after being penalized twice for unsportsmanlike conduct during one drive last weekend. Jackson was called for roughing the passer on Oakland's Derek Carr, then he protested the call and was penalized for using abusive language toward an official. Four plays later, Jackson was again called for unsportsmanlike conduct after a field goal and then ejected.
In case you haven't noticed, which is virtually impossible, Peyton Manning has gone to TV commercials full time.
Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman was eager to get on an airplane and head overseas to London. Norman, the league's top-paid corner, will face a test in Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, who enters the game between the teams at Wembley Stadium on Sunday with the most catches and second-most receiving yards of any player. The Redskins have faced a number of top-tier wide receivers already this season, including the Odell Beckham Jr. of the New York Giants and Dez Bryant of the Dallas Cowboys, but Green is different.
The NFL trade deadline never quite stirs up the interest seen at that time of year in other professional sports.

The days of the New York Giants' defense giving away games is seemingly over. A multimillion dollar infusion in the offseason has transformed Steve Spagnuolo's unit from the worst in the NFL to one that is suddenly finding ways to win games. The defense finally got a pass rush against the Los Angeles Rams and intercepted four passes, including one incredible return that Landon Collins turned into a touchdown, in a 17-0 win that gave New York (4-3) a two-game winning streak heading into its bye week.
Rex Ryan likes nothing better than beating the Patriots. On Sunday, the star quarterback brings his 6-1 team to Buffalo. Brady has owned the Bills throughout his career, and pretty much owned Ryan, too.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Titans are without three starters against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night, including half of their secondary.
