(Reuters) - Controversial New York Giants kicker Josh Brown was sacked by the National Football League team on Tuesday after he became embroiled in a domestic violence case. Four days after Brown was temporarily barred by the team from games and practices after documents showed his then-wife accused him of a years-long pattern of physical and emotional abuse, he was cut from the roster. "We believed we did the right thing at every juncture in our relationship with Josh," Giants president John Mara said in a statement.
The New York Giants sacked Josh Brown on Tuesday following domestic violence allegations embroiling the kicker, apologizing for failing to act sooner over abuse claims made by his ex-wife. Brown had been placed on paid leave by the National Football League last week after the emergence of police documents which cited ex-wife Molly as saying the 37-year-old had been violent with her on more than 20 occasions. The case has embarrassed the National Football League and led to accusations that the sport's rulers are failing to take domestic violence cases seriously.

The New York Giants released placekicker Josh Brown on Tuesday, six days after police documents revealed Brown admitted to repeatedly abusing his former wife while they were married. The move came shortly after the player issued a statement insisting that he never hit his wife during a six year period when he admits spousal abuse. Giants President John Mara says the team's beliefs, judgments and decisions were ''misguided'' in how it handled its relationship with Brown.
