The Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent running back Knile Davis and free agent cornerback Coty Sensabaugh on Monday, regrouping after missing out on coveted linebacker Dont'a Hightower by finding depth at two areas of need heading into 2017. The New York Jets claimed him off waivers, but he never reported.
The news seemed unimaginable, much as it might have 78 years ago when Yankees fans learned Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with the disease that would later bear his name. Dwight Clark didn't need the full 140 characters to stun football fans everywhere. ''I wanted to share some unfortunate news: I have ALS,'' Clark tweeted .
The New York Giants are giving former Jets quarterback Geno Smith a chance to learn from Eli Manning. The Giants on Monday announced they had signed Smith and cornerback Valentino Blake, who also excels on special teams. A second-round draft choice out of West Virginia in 2013, Smith has been a bust after a good rookie season.
North Carolina State didn't have to look very far to find its next men's basketball coach. The school has hired UNC Wilmington's Kevin Keatts to take over as head basketball coach, staying in its home state to find a coach who had spent time as an assistant to a Hall of Fame coach before leading his own NCAA Tournament team. The school announced Keatts' hiring in a news release one day after his Seahawks lost to Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The New York Giants signed defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to a four-year contract, the team announced Friday. Pierre-Paul agreed to a $62 million contract with $40 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports. The deal for the star pass rusher also includes a $20 million signing bonus and he will earn $34 million within 11 months and $49.5 million over the first three years, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported.
Jason Pierre-Paul, the defensive end who lost a finger and damaged his right hand in a 2015 fireworks accident, signed a four-year NFL contract Friday with the New York Giants. In the season after the accident, Pierre-Paul played only eight games and made just 26 tackles and only one sack. "This is where I wanted to be," Pierre-Paul said.
Shutdown Corner is counting down the top 50 prospects in the 2017 NFL draft with a scouting report, quotes from NFL evaluators and a projection where they might be drafted. Key stat: Melifonwu measured in the 95th percentile, per, in the following categories at the NFL scouting combine — measured against defensive back results dating back to 1999: height, weight, 40-yard dash (4.40 seconds), vertical jump (44 inches) and broad jump (141 inches). The New York Giants are convinced star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is fully healed from a fireworks accident that severely damaged his right hand. ''This is where I wanted to be,'' Pierre-Paul told the Giants website Friday. Two summers ago, on July 4, Pierre-Paul's right hand was severely damaged in a fireworks accident in Florida.
Josh McCown might be the answer - in the short term, at least - for the quarterback-needy Jets. The free agent QB is meeting with New York on Friday and Saturday, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. The Jets have just the inexperienced Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on their roster, and McCown would provide a veteran presence who could potentially start and be a mentor to the youngsters.
