NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Jets general manager John Idzik says the team is taking a ''judicious and selective'' approach in free agency, but adds that he thinks ''we've been productive.''
All season there has been a buzz around women's basketball about UConn and Notre Dame. The teams enter the NCAA tournament unbeaten - only the second time that's ever happened. They are on a collision course to meet in the national championship game. If they do both get to Nashville, the Irish will be all that stands between Geno Auriemma and a record ninth NCAA championship, breaking a tie with Tennessee.
Hakeem Nicks took the best bet he could find in free agency. Less than 24 hours after the former Giants receiver agreed to a one-year deal with Indianapolis, Nicks said he's so confident in his own skills that it was an easy decision. ''I believe it's going to pay off.'' The Colts are counting on it. A year ago, they risked about $2.5 million on another veteran free agent with a first-round pedigree to help Indy's still young receiving contingent.
Jon Beason is going be back in the middle of the New York Giants' defense, and he is going to have help at the linebacker spot. The Giants confirmed Friday that they re-signed Beason and later said they also signed former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain. The team did not disclose contract details, but reports said Beason got $19 million over three years. Terms of McClain's deal were not immediately available.
The Chicago Bears agreed to a three-year contract with defensive end Willie Young and a one-year deal with receiver Domenik Hixon on Thursday. Young joins a defense that is getting a makeover after struggling in a big way last season. The Bears released eight-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers this week and brought in defensive end Lamarr Houston from Oakland, linebacker Jordan Senn from Carolina and safeties Ryan Mundy (New York Giants) and M.D. Jennings (Green Bay).
Corey Graham's desire to play for his hometown Buffalo Bills was so strong, the free agent cornerback never let the Washington Redskins finish making their pitch. Graham intends to travel to Buffalo on Friday to sign his contract and meet the coaching staff to discuss his potential role.
Pass rusher DeMarcus Ware got a $30 million, three-year contract from the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after being released by the Dallas Cowboys. Not quite keeping pace with the nonstop nature of Day 1 of free agency, Day 2 did include the Buccaneers releasing cornerback Darrelle Revis after failing to trade him;
Armed with another $10 million or so to spend thanks to the increased salary cap, NFL teams dive into free agency on Tuesday. ''Free agency in and of itself is an overpayment situation,'' says former NFL executive Bill Polian, who built three Super Bowl teams and now is an analyst for ESPN and SiriusXM. Some situations teams are forced to deal with, and you have to bite the bullet and do it.' '' While Polian makes the point that the really elite players don't ever become available in free agency, the 2014 class is filled with former All-Pros and Pro Bowlers. They come in all sizes for all jobs, from pass rushers Jared Allen, Justin Tuck and Antonio Smith to running backs Maurice Jones-Drew and Willis McGahee.
