OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) -- Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta is lost for the season after undergoing hip surgery, a major blow to the team's bid to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Your browser does not support iframes. With one big piece of news that Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller is facing a four-game suspension, every good team in the AFC perked up a bit. There were two clear favorites in the AFC this season: Denver and New England, in that order. The last month hasn't been very good to either of them. The Patriots obviously cut tight end Aaron Hernandez, one of their best players. And now comes word that Miller, who could make an argument as the best defensive player in the NFL (though he'd lose that argument to J.J. Watt), could be suspended four games for violating the league's drug policy, according to multiple reports including the Denver Post . According to the Post's Mike Klis , Miller had tested positive for marijuana and amphetamines as a rookie in 2011. He is appealing, and it's not unheard of that a player wins an appeal. Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman did last year. So there's hope for Miller and the Broncos. If Miller wins his appeal, the Broncos can carry on as the clear favorites. But if he is suspended four games, does that change the AFC race?
July 17 (The Sports Xchange) - Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez said Wednesday that the 2013 season will definitely be his last as an active player in the NFL. "Without a doubt, yes. Without question," Gonzalez said in an interview on The NFL Network. "I told everybody I was going to retire last year, and I really meant that when I was saying that last year." But Gonzalez had a change of heart and decided to play one more season. Hence, he'll be back in the Falcons' training camp next week. ...

Former New York Giants linebacker Barrett Green has sued the Washington Redskins, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and tight end Robert Royal for a knee injury he sustained in a game late in the 2004 season. Now the Redskins are asking the judge to dismiss the lawsuit. According to Jessica Gresko of the Associated Press,…
Barrett Green's lawsuit against the Washington Redskins could have some interesting ramifications, if successful. Green, a NFL linebacker from 2000 to 2005, said his knee was injured by a Redskins player as part of a bounty program. The Associated Press said Green's lawsuit also names former Redskins tight end Robert Royal and former Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams – who was once indefinitely suspended by the NFL for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal. Green said he suffered a knee injury on Dec. 5, 2004 while playing for the New York Giants as the result of an "unusual, outrageous and an obvious cheap shot." He played in just one game in 2005 before retiring.
COMMENTARY| The arrest and subsequent release of tight end Aaron Hernandez left the New England Patriots with a hole at the position that will be addressed before the start of the regular season. While they have several in-house replacement candidates, an intriguing option with a similar skill set to Hernandez is free agent Travis Beckum.
